Abstract

The arrangement and content of the first eight chapters in this book are intended primarily for the tutelage of the trainee colposcopist. Accordingly, emphasis has been placed on understanding the tissue basis of colposcopy, colposcopic terminology and grading systems, the indications and technique of colposcopy and the recognition of various colposcopic patterns in the diagnosis of cervical neoplasia. The chapter on "The Colposcopy Unit" addresses credentialing and resource issues, which may be especially useful to gynecologists interested in setting up colposcopy clinics within their department or practice. The chapter on "The Papanicolaou Smear" addresses several important issues in cytological screening, and knowledge of appropriate triaging and follow-up protocols for patients with abnormal Pap smears, as well as training in evolving treatment options, are essential to the successful practice of colposcopy.
