Abstract

Tourism Ethics applies moral concepts and issues to some of the most vexing tourism dilemmas of the day, through foundational research from many disciplines including biology, psychology, anthropology, geography and philosophy. Areas of emphasis include sex tourism, all-inclusives, ecotourism, justice, rights, deontology and teleology.

Dr. Fennell’s main research focus is ecotourism, which he has explored for many years. He is the author of Ecotourism: An Introduction (a general text on ecotourism), Ecotourism Programme Planning (a text which examines the strategic programme planning model applied to ecotourism), and co-editor of Ecotourism Policy and Planning. Dr. Fennell is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ecotourism. He teaches ecotourism and outdoor recreation at Brock University, Canada.

Much has been written, often in a wishful thinking mode, about ethics and behaviour in tourism. For the first time an author has written a (lengthy and detailed) volume on the subject, which not only discusses ethics in the context of tourism, but provides the reader with a valuable discussion of the philosophy and necessity of an ethical approach to behaviour. It is a volume that should be required reading for all researchers, developers and particularly decision-makers in tourism.
