Abstract

Change, Challenge and School Nursing looks at both the health needs of young people and good practice in school nursing.

Based on a survey of almost three thousand pupils, it examines young people's views on their own health, their support needs, where they turn to for advice, and their contacts with school nurses. Interviews with school nursing professionals, provide a 'snapshot' of school nursing services in transition from a medical model to a public health role, outlining provision, priorities and how young people's health needs are being addressed.

The challenges in providing an effective service for all young people are highlighted and taking the views and experiences of young users into account will help to meet some of these. The lessons from this research are broadly applicable across the service.
